Improved Server Registration UI I recently redid the server instance registration wizard for the Sun Java System Application Server in NetBeans 5. Lots of folks told me it was lousy (in the 4.1 release) and I agreed. The old UI provided the same features as the new UI, but it did it using about one screen.

The new UI makes all of the features available, but has a number of different screens. We did a fair bit of work to make sure that the 90% use-case [a user wants to register a default instance from the installation directory's domains] could be a single screen process.

One other change that we made was to allow users to create a personal instance "any where" at "any time". So, the advice here doesn't apply to NetBeans 5. (2005-12-19 14:30:32.0) Permalink Comments [2]

What a coincidence that just today, I went about using the feature you mention.

I was successful in configuring GlassFish as the application server.

I was unable to configure a second Sun Java System Application Server on the screen (no choice to change the path for the location of the appserver).

(I wanted to configure App Server 8 as an alternative - is that possible ?)

In the new UI, yes. If you get a daily build of NetBeans 5.0, you will be able to do it.

The old UI had a notion of a single platform/App Server Install Location. This causes some real problems when you want to mix-and-match 8.x and GlassFish.

The newer UI resolves some of those issues. You can look at this for more detailed info.
