I finally hired Dave Johnson to work full time on Roller (our blogging system of choice.)

Things have been a little tough here at Sun and I've not had the opportunity to hire anyone in so long I had forgotten the process. Seriously. When Hoffie and I put out blogs.sun.com, we started talking about hiring someone fulltime to work on blogs (and wiki's, etc.). I started talking to Dave at JavaOne...

Tim Bray and Simon Phipps talked internally and externally (to Dave) about a full-time blog engineer as well. I finally couldn't wait for the internal mechanisms to work anymore - heck, Jonathan Schwartz was blogging! I took one of my few, precious requisitions and instead of hiring a support engineer to help keep www.sun.com running, I hired Dave. I'm thrilled to bring him on board and my list of things for him to do already fills my whiteboard (and I have a 4x8' whiteboard, and I write small :)

If anyone knows a great search engineer (junior position) I have a req open to join the web search team for Sun too. Ok, I know it's bad form to place this in my blog, but heck, I'm not getting great resumes so far...

As I said, we're excited to have Dave come on and get a pager so I don't keep getting woken up in the middle of the night. I mean, Dave's first tasks will include building failover into the app so we all don't get paged in the middle of the night. Hey, who is it anyway that hits my servers at 2am? Whoever it is, please stop that; I need the sleep

Special thanks to Hoffie for providing yeoman's duties. He's been slaving away on roller on a regular basis, while developing new features for java.com as his day job. I just kibbitz on chrooting, mysql and wierd network issues.

Thanks Will! I can't wait to see that whiteboard and to put an end to that beeping pager. - Dave
