Personal Case Study in Sun Reliability

It must be 5 or 6 years now that I've been running a Sun V120 in a cabinet in my garage. Running as personal server to manage my web sites, LDAP addressbook, email, and a few other things. I've gotta say the thing has been a champ. Its happily run with no complaints though the hot summers in the bay area, enduring several day stretches of triple digit temperatures at a time, sitting next to some of my wife's canning jars, keeping them company.

You can't see it from the pictures, but I installed an old case fan on one of the doors of the cabinet to help vent in cool air. I remember being concerned about the hot summers and looking at the product specifications on sun.com to see how it would fair. I remember reading that it was even spec'd out to handle up to 72 hour stretches of something like 120 degree heat.

Well, here you go, a real case study in the reliability of a Sun box. You'll notice in the pictures the layers of dust caked on the intake on the front of the machine. I (used to) do some woodworking in my garage in my free time. The box has undoubtedly sucked in quite a bit of airborne sawdust over the years as well. I wonder how it looks inside... Gulp!
