As you might already know, a bundle of Web development oriented tools is available (part of the GlassFish portfolio), called the Web Stack. I have already talked about it here and also here. I will therefore not go much into the details and benefits of using this bundle.

This is thus a quick note to say that the new release (Web Stack1.5) is now available. You can get it here: http://www.sun.com/software/webstack/get.jsp

Web Stack 1.5 ships with the most recent evolutions of the open source releases including latest releases of Apache web server, MySQL 5.1 and more:

Fully relocatable Update Center ips(5) image distribution
Apache HTTP Server 2.2.11
lighttpd 1.4.21
memcached 1.2.5
MySQL 5.0.67 and 5.1
PHP 5.2.9
Python 2.6
Ruby 1.8.7
Squid 2.7.STABLE5
Tomcat 6.0.18
GlassFish v2.1
Sun Continuous Integration Server 1.312

But it also comes with some brand new pieces such ads the "Web Stack Enterprise Manager" and the " Sun Continuous Integration Server " based on the Hudson open source project. I'm quite eager to test those, so as soon as I've played around with it I will come with a more technical oriented post.

Open Source provides a range of new ways for an organization to deliver their IT objectives, from reduced cost and increased security through to new ways to reach customers. Sun has collated a range of information showing the best case studies, white papers and latest examples of how customers are exploiting Open Source to change and radically improve the way that they deliver their projects. So if you are interested in the latest examples of Open Source in use, this is a great resource to use.

As part of this activity Sun is developing an ebook which takes a series of different themes and discusses how in each of those areas Open Source, and the relevant Sun products in those areas, can be most effectively used. The ebook is being released as a number of chapters, the first of those being a Guide to Using Open-Source Software to Develop Web Applications. So if you want to learn more about this subject you can read the chapter and the full book will be available in the near future.

We've also added this chapter to the resources section of our Web community and will add the additional chapters and the full ebook when they are available.

We have unveiled a new a hardware and software system for the deployment of BI infrastructure.

Sun Business Intelligence Solution for Web Infrastructure brings together Sun’s Open Networks Systems with Infobright, the open source data warehousing company, and Pentaho, the commercial open source alternative for business intelligence (BI).

Depending on your data requirements, user traffic, and workload, the solution provides users with server options and storage. Additionally, it offers the flexibility to either separate compute and storage nodes, or separate data warehousing and BI functions onto separate compute nodes.

At the basic level the solution is comprised of the Sun Fire™ X4275 Server which combines both compute and storage capabilities. For higher data requirements users can choose either the Sun Fire™ X2270 Server or Sun Fire™ X4170 Server. Storage is provided by Sun Storage 7310 Unified Storage System and includes Infobright’s column-oriented analytic database integrated with Sun's MySQL. Pentaho BI Suite Enterprise Edition will address the spectrum of end-user BI needs for interactive reporting, analysis and dashboards, along with data integration capabilities.

Read more about the solution here.

By all measures, last week’s JavaOne Conference was a huge success. JavaOne Communities across Facebook and Twitter count over 46,700 members and “JavaOne” was one of the top 10 most discussed topics on Twitter.

The Javone Twazzup is a real time social media window that aggregates JavaOne Tweets and allows you a peek into the JavaOne TwitterSphere!

Channel Sun is chocked full out of great videos for you to catch a glimpse inside all the action at JavaOne. “The JavaOne Insider” videos feature host Chris Melissinos hitting the conference floor and offer an eyeful of some very cool Java powered technologies.  Over the course of 3 days Chris checks out JavaFX TV, Neil Young's LINCVOLT, and even gives a shout-out to the P.I.E. Theory guys!

And for your convenience, JavaOne General Session video replays are available, as are those from CommunityOne. Technical sessions from CommunityOne are also great resources for all to check out. Enjoy!

It's JavaOne day 3, be sure to check out the day's general sessions. Featured from 8:30 AM – 9:15 AM is the Microsoft Corporation General Session, Software and Services: The Next Application Platform.  In addition, don’t miss out on IBM’S General Session: Extreme Transaction Processing and Elasticity – The Answer for Your Most Demanding Applications, which is slated for 5:30 PM – 6:15 PM.  As a reminder you can watch a webcast of the general sessions here.

Tonight’s “After Dark” Bash is a great opportunity to sample some complimentary food and drink (two tickets per person, which can be picked up at registration) as well as have a bit of fun.  The bash has been moved to the Marriott on 4th and Mission.  The party goes from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM (doors open at 6:30). CommunityOne attendees are also invited to the "After Dark" Bash.

And we’ll even include a few pictures from the past two days at JavaOne. Poker? Rock Band?  It looks like Java Utopia is all that it’s cracked up to be and more!  It’s also good to see that those P.I.E. guys, Baron and Hector, haven’t been kidnapped with all the madness they've been up to.

At the JavaOne Conference we announced several technology updates to the Sun GlassFish(TM) Portfolio and early access of GlassFish v3 containing a full preview of the forthcoming Java(TM) Platform Enterprise Edition 6 (Java EE 6) specification.

Catch a live preview by going into one of Sun Booths for a live demo.

Or for questions, comments or conversations about GlassFish or Java EE6 find the Fedoras. They can help!

As you all know by now Sun GlassFish(TM) Portfolio is the most complete, open source, high-performance Web application platform. It is comprised of leading open source technologies including: OpenESB, OpenMQ, Liferay Portal, GlassFish Web Stack, as well as GlassFish(TM) – the industry's most downloaded application server.

Briefly enhancements to the GlassFish Portfolio include:

Sun GlassFish Web Stack has been updated with new versions of leading open source projects, and now provides a new, comprehensive UI-based management tool to simplify single and multiple instance deployments. Essentially, enterprises implementing dynamic languages have access to the latest technology versions in a fully supported, cross platform offering.

With the 2009 JavaOne Conference officially underway in San Francisco, we’re overflowing with exciting news!  Today's 14th annual conference marks the official availability of the JavaFX 1.2 platform which features significant performance updates including new cross platform User Interface (UI) controls, faster application start-up, streaming media support and other performance enhancements across desktop, browser and mobile.

Today also marks the much anticipated arrival of the Java Store.  As discussed two weeks ago by Jonathan Schwartz in his blog, the Java Store fundamentally represents a huge opportunity for the entire Java ecosystem.  The Java Store simultaneously gives companies and developers a vehicle for reach and monetization across any device that runs Java.  You’ll not only see applications for your desktop at the Java Store, but mobile and TV apps as well.  Exciting stuff indeed, especially if you’re an ISV looking to reach the estimated 1 billion Java users around the world!

Did you know the average American spends 4 ½ hours in front of the television per day?  With that, Sun takes the next step in extending the JavaFX vision by seamlessly bringing rich and expressive interactive content to TV.  At JavaOne, Sun demonstrates a proof of concept with JavaFX TV running on a next generation LG electronics TV.

For those out in San Francisco, be sure to check out Java Utopia on the floor at JavaOne.  Simply put, Java Utopia is a quarter mile of FUN!  It’s a place where developers can go when they aren’t in a technical session and experience an interactive and intimate environment with the creators of the latest Java technologies.  Be sure to check it out!
