As you might already know, a bundle of Web development oriented tools is available (part of the GlassFish portfolio), called the Web Stack. I have already talked about it here and also here. I will therefore not go much into the details and benefits of using this bundle.

This is thus a quick note to say that the new release (Web Stack1.5) is now available. You can get it here: http://www.sun.com/software/webstack/get.jsp

Web Stack 1.5 ships with the most recent evolutions of the open source releases including latest releases of Apache web server, MySQL 5.1 and more:

Fully relocatable Update Center ips(5) image distribution
Apache HTTP Server 2.2.11
lighttpd 1.4.21
memcached 1.2.5
MySQL 5.0.67 and 5.1
PHP 5.2.9
Python 2.6
Ruby 1.8.7
Squid 2.7.STABLE5
Tomcat 6.0.18
GlassFish v2.1
Sun Continuous Integration Server 1.312

But it also comes with some brand new pieces such ads the "Web Stack Enterprise Manager" and the " Sun Continuous Integration Server " based on the Hudson open source project. I'm quite eager to test those, so as soon as I've played around with it I will come with a more technical oriented post.

We have unveiled a new a hardware and software system for the deployment of BI infrastructure.

Sun Business Intelligence Solution for Web Infrastructure brings together Sun’s Open Networks Systems with Infobright, the open source data warehousing company, and Pentaho, the commercial open source alternative for business intelligence (BI).

Depending on your data requirements, user traffic, and workload, the solution provides users with server options and storage. Additionally, it offers the flexibility to either separate compute and storage nodes, or separate data warehousing and BI functions onto separate compute nodes.

At the basic level the solution is comprised of the Sun Fire™ X4275 Server which combines both compute and storage capabilities. For higher data requirements users can choose either the Sun Fire™ X2270 Server or Sun Fire™ X4170 Server. Storage is provided by Sun Storage 7310 Unified Storage System and includes Infobright’s column-oriented analytic database integrated with Sun's MySQL. Pentaho BI Suite Enterprise Edition will address the spectrum of end-user BI needs for interactive reporting, analysis and dashboards, along with data integration capabilities.

Read more about the solution here.

In a previous post I started talking about going through the full life cycle of an real and complex PHP application (In our case Olio)

In that previous post we saw how to get Olio sources, and how to intall Faban to drive load.

Now we will get to the main part which is using Olio sources in NetBeans to build and deploy the system.

Import the source files into NetBeans.

The goal of all this is for me to test how I can use an existing PHP code in NetBeans 6.5, so now that I have the sources, I need to import them.[Read More]

Exactly two weeks from today Sun will present a technical webinar that will give an overview of the scalability and performance improvements of MySQL 5.4.

Our presenters, Allan Packer and Jimmy Guerrero, will explore several benchmarks around MySQL 5.4, including Sysbench results on CMT and Nehalem systems and an OLTP workload derived from an industry-standard benchmark.

MySQL 5.4 has much faster response times (90%), and scalability up to 16-way x86 servers and 64-way CMT servers. So if you are interested in learning about the performance improvements in MySQL 5.4 and related benchmarks please join us on Thursday, May 21 2009 at 3pm San Francisco time and 6pm Boston time.

NetBeans 6.5 comes now with the PHP support, and OpenSolaris looks like a great development and deployment platforme for AMP (Apache, MySQL, PHP) developers.

In order to confirm this (or not) I'm going to go through the full lifecycle of a real, thus complex PHP application.

With an eye towards continued innovation, Sun last week announced a new family of x64 blades and rack mount servers based on the Intel Xeon Processor 5500 Series (Nehalem).  The seven new Open Network Systems feature next-generation flash storage technology to eliminate I/O bottlenecks and integrated networking technologies to decrease cost and complexity.  Click here for details about the technical features (like the Network Express Module) and enhanced benefits built into the new systems.

For those of you operating in a web environment, check out Neelakanth Nadgir’s blog about MySQL scalability on the new Nehalem Systems.  Neekalkanth was fortunate enough to have early access to a Sun Fire x4270 and had an opportunity to test some of latest MySQL performance and scalability enhancements.  His blog provides details on his findings. Enjoy.

As an ISV, are you asking yourself, why and when should I use MySQL Enterprise? Below are some guidelines you might find useful.

In a recent post by our ISV Engineering colleague, Adina Kalin, she wrote that when your application is ready for deployment and your business’ growth is ramping up, MySQL Enterprise tools such as the MySQL Enterprise Monitor, MySQL Query Analyzer , and MySQL Cluster will prove invaluable for keeping your servers under control.  As a result, ISVs can realize improved application availability and an impressive ability to discover slow sqls.  ISVs can also take advantage of quarterly source/binary releases and gain access to a developer version of the MySQL Enterprise software with a limited license for testing by registering for the MECA program.

If you are developing and deploying in a web environment be sure to take advantage of additional resources and information on the Sun Partner Advantage ISV Web Community site.

From Web and more, a new week and new insights!  Check out this especially well written entry from Dave Lutz’s blog focused on MySQL query cache sizing.  The entry's in-depth content draws upon an actual customer usage experience and addresses various issues related to the query cache like ideal sizing and migration.

As highlighted in his blog, Dave utilizes multiple technical tools like the DTraceToolkit and the query cache section of the MySQL documentation library, all of which are available to ISVs using MySQL.  For other technical resources tailored to an ISV audience, check out the resources page of the Sun Partner Advantage Web Community.
