As Sun continues its R&D efforts, the clear focus is on reducing cost, complexity, space, and power requirements (this probably simplifies our R&D effort a bit too much since we spend ~$2B/year on it). Our competitors are also listening to the marketplace and focusing on how to make an impact in these areas too. Sun has done more in proving its thought leadership throughout the product line, and one point of proof is Sun MD.

I mentioned in an earlier post that a web customer of ours was looking at finding new ways to meet capacity needs, they couldn't build capacity quick enough. They are looking at Sun MD as a potential solution. It's built with space and power reduction, open standards, and increasing your speed of deployment (back to the "reducing cost" point I made in relation to our R&D efforts) in mind. I keep hearing more and more interest from our customers in leveraging this game changer for these reasons. We're focused on being the best in the industry as in relates to a specific server, but we also take a higher level view into the datacenter through this solution, and the response so far from customers has been phenomenal. I wanted to highlight how Sun is using its own technology to find these benefits and the tech specs of the product itself, enjoy!
