Simon, please tell me that the story Slashdot is running about Java getting GPL'd isn't true? :| That would make baby jesus cry at the very least. And its not April, I double checked the date. And I know, its slashdot linking to some other place and that cruft, but even the thought of it happening just doesn't set well. Hope to hear from someone from Sun on this. Perhaps I'll email a few friends there and ask too.

Jeffrey, I don't know if that rumour is true or not, but I think it would be a very smart move by Sun. Let's assume they dual licence, keeping the existing binary licence alongside the GPL. What changes? Java gains access to a new distribution channel (Linux etc), and the strong copyleft provisions of the GPL discourage commercial interests from forking Java. Meanwhile, the vast existing Java user-base continues to use the same binary licence as before. Everybody wins (except those that want greater control over Java).

So what is it that you fear?

I so much agree with Jeffrey Olson. Could anyone from Sun confirm us that it will not be GPL?
