The Open Rights Group are going to hold a week of events on e-voting. Experts from Europe and the US will talk about the experiences so far, including e-voting machines hacked to play chess in the Netherlands and US problems that may have led to thousands of votes going missing in 2006’s congressional elections. Why is ORG organising this? The UK plans to hold e-voting pilots in 2007. If your jetsetting life style finds you in the UK some time during that week we would love to see you there Simon.

Simon, some of your posts show a level of extremism in US so-called Christians that is frightening as it is approaching the levels reached by other religious extremisms, in other locations or in other centuries. Why is there currently such a rise in ideological extremism related to religion in different cultures? Do they have similar causes or are they different phenomena? Are they caused by a rejection of modernism, which includes science and gender equality? Are there other factors? Is this caused by a strong feeling of insecurity? Is is caused by propaganda? Both?

I think they are related culturally, but expounding it would be tough here! Extremism of any kind - political, religious, ethnic, military and business - threatens society and I believe we need to remain vigilant for it and speak up against it loudly.

Simon, I strongly agree on the need to loudly speak up against extremism of all kinds, when we can. In many locations today no one can do so. I also would like to add that most if not all extremisms have in common the belief, explicit or implicit, that the believers are superior while disbelievers are inferior, wrong, and their very existence a threat. Some people who otherwise do not show any sign of extremism, do show a form of extremism towards other sentient species on Earth. Many whalers are examples.
