This is one of my favourite places to drive. The article includes some very good tips (even if he does completely ignore the serene Mono Lake), worth a read if you're planning to ride 395 soon (which I am!)

Tioga pass through Yosemite is amazing too. I wish I could organise time / money / fitness to mountain bike around Mammouth mountain - sadly stayed there only overnight.
What I found startling on all those roads through the desert (395, 120, etc) is to contrast between the harsh, but beautiful, natural landscape, and then suddenly, bam, a town which is lush and green (and irrigated).
I really wish that when I was blogging back then and that flickr existed - obviously I have photos (even though my digital broke in Yosemite, luckily had a film SLR too) and route plan etc, but the immediacy of blogging and posting photos to flickr on subsequent trips is fantastic.
