re: the second report, looks to me (as an american) that this is another UK-US cultural difference. In the US, for cases attracting the interest of the press, it's rare for any significant surprises to emerge while the prosecution is presenting its case -- it's all been in the papers well in advance of the trial. I am troubled by some of the details that have emerged (best not to give even the smallest hint of why the bombs didn't work, lest the next one actually work..). but from the US point of view, the burden for maintaining confidentiality falls on the police, not the press -- investigators privy to this sort of information should just keep their mouths shut.
