Yep, the 2.6.23 kernel has support for the LDom virtualisation features of the UltraSPARC chipset. Already.

Glynn Foster is doing a fine job taking notes at today's OpenSolaris Developer Summit in Santa Cruz.

I think I had always assumed this was what happened, but it's depressing to read about all the same.

I've been hoping for this development -- more support of non-Java languages on the JVM.
There are a lot of things that I like about Sun -- mainly Free Software, business openness, and good tech such as Solaris and ZFS. But frankly, the glorification of Java puts Sun out of step with the technical communities that I belong to. Going forward, Java is at best just one of many useful tools, and not even the one with a plurality of marketshare. At worst, Java is due to become The Cobol Of The 00's -- a legacy language that people love to hate but that they can't get rid of because too much unmaintainable, business-critical systems are written in it.
Since Sun is apparently incapable of doing an about-face and relegating Java to the status of "just some tool, and not necessarily the best one for your use case" (especially since the recent ticker symbol switch), I've been hoping that they would start some face-saving manuever by emphasizing the Java brand as a pure business brand independent of specific technology and by extending the JVM to support other languages better.

Zooko
P.S. Okay, here is an example of the glorification of Java which is unremarkable within the context of Sun culture. I looked at MortazaviBlog today, enjoyed the distinction between conservative vs. radical, and then stopped reading when he said that James Gosling's invention of Java was radical. The dramatic success of Java is due to Eric Schmidt and Kim Polese, not due to James Gosling. I'm not trying to be mean here, but just out of honesty somebody has to say that, within the contexts of *my* communities, this emperor has no clothes.

I apologize for following-up to my own post, but it would really be remiss of me not to mention the critical importance of Netscape in making Java into the phenomenon that it was.
