I'm amazed to discover it was still in service. Just goes to show how long technologies can stay in the market after they have been deprecated.

If this catches on we could see OpenJDK all over the place. Hope it does!

"This is Version 1.0. There will be bugs in it. We don't want to support and open it until it is ready." After all, that might allow people to, you know, contribute. Fix the bugs. That sort of thing.

Hrm, I tend to disagree. What if they haven't stabilised APIs or code, and they don't want to publish it (or announce it publicly) because they don't want people working on volatile code?
It takes resources to have an open source community, and if they're not ready to commit the resources yet (which is entirely their choice) then I'd rather they devote the development resources to finishing things up so that they can then open source it in a supportable environment.
There's nothing worse publishing something hacky or volatile, having a contributor give back a fix or extend it only to be told the code is changing anyway. That valuable contributor has now become a burned contributor who may not help out again when the project has stabilised.
