"I watched this and agree with Treehugger: Jeremy Clarkson should be ashamed."

Firstly Simon, I like the short link posts.

Secondly, the ashamed comment, really, I mean I would expect that from an American but from a Brit? I assume you've watched top gear, I mean anyone who takes any social comment, experiment, car test or whatever seriously on this program needs to chill out a bit, its just three "lads" let loose in the toy box and much the better for it. I mean these are the blokes who fired a mini down a ski slope!

Simon,

I have no issue either with top gear nor with the treehuggers, the following is just an observation:

like the treehuggers, you chose to ignore the punch line (or moral, if you will) of the whole test: it's not about what car you drive, but how you drive.

David: Of course - I watch regularly and enjoy the jokes. Nonetheless, I sat waiting for the jokey explanation of why the thing was a false test, and it didn't happen. If they'd said "this test was just as bogus as a load of the arguments we hear about Eco-Blah becuase..." I would have been happy. But it didn't happen - instead, it was an enraged-Daily-Mail-reader event.

Michael: Sorry, I'm afraid I don't buy that. Driven the same way as a Prius, the other car is not the same. It's about more than how you drive, it's also about other choices too.

I don't think I've ever seen a jokey explanation for any of JC rants but like a said you have to take the whole show with a large pinch of salt, it ain't newsnight, and if ever anyone uses a demo/test from top gear as evidence for anything, you've learned something very useful about that person :-)

I drive very quickly and aggressively... for drivers like myself (many of which are Top Gear fans) the comparison is fair and accurate. Use the right tool for the job... if you drive like grandma, drive a Prius. If you drive like a man, drive a real car. And if you want a real performing "green" car, buy a TDI.

Or, alternatively, change your behaviour.

So... I have a Prius.

I drive like a grandma that makes no noise when getting into a parking lot. :) I love every moment of silence of it.

I've seen a few comparisons Prius vs "insert your favorite macho car here"... they all follow the same model. They are all flawed for one thing.

It's like sorting your garbage when the city doesn't do separate processing. Even in the odd chance that it's not actually used... it's still educational. Those are the cars of the future. In fact, the M3-class fuel cars won't exist in 2030... electric ones will... we don't have a choice there.

I like my grandma car. It means that maybe when I'm a grandpa, the air will be breathable.

Gilles.
