LiveMink OGB Special: Jörg Schilling

Many Unix and Unix-alike OS users owe a huge debt of gratitude to this candidate for his open source software. Without cdrecord, we'd be living in a greatly impoverished world concerning CD and DVD support. His high-energy, forthright and sometimes controversial approach makes him an interesting and often compelling community member.

While cdrecord is an ok piece of software, you can't honestly believe that an alternate cd and dvd recording application would not have filled this critical role. In fact, we are probably all worse off for the fact that his application was released early and was "good enough" that better developers didn't spend their time on another one. The man is a pompous ass and needs to be called out on it.

Oh man, was he young in that pic (:-) Anyways, the cdrtools suite is one of the most useful pieces of software ever written for UNIX in general, and we sure do all owe a huge debt to Jörg for EMPOWERING us all to be able to master the optical media. cdrtools is the most powerful optical media mastering software I have ever used, so much so, that no commercial tool I'm using on Windows comes even close. I can do stuff with cdrtools that is impossible in Nero. Jörg has done an enormous contribution to Solaris and to the OpenSolaris community and has been a strong proponent of Solaris long before OpenSolaris was even a gleam in Sun's eye. As a true Solaris fan, he certainly deserves to be nominated for OGB.
