Mozilla/Thunderbird Message Filters Export And Import

Just create a Mozilla/Thunderbird Message Filters Export And Import (2.0 compatible now)extension. You can use it to export and import your message filters.

How to Install In Thunderbird:

Right-Click the link above and choose "Save Link As..." to Download and save the file to your hard disk.
In Mozilla Thunderbird, open the extension manager (Tools Menu/Extensions)
Click the Install button, and locate/select the file you downloaded and click "OK"

How to Install In Mozilla:

Right-Click the link above and choose "Save Link As..." to Download and save the file to your hard disk.
In Mozilla, open the file you downloaded

How to use:
1. Open Tools/Message Filters, Click Export Filters to export message filters for selected account.
2. Execute Tools/Import Filters to import message filters to selet account. Please restart your Mozilla/Thunderbird immediately after you do an import.

Changes since: 1.0

Add check code while importing to ensure users use the right files exported by this addon.
Add auto restart after importing.

Cool. It would have been extra nice if the resulting exported file could be saved as a message or a message attachment in the INBOX so that you don't have to transfer it manually. If the filter settings could somehow be stored in the inbox (or any other folder in an IMAP account), and synchronized every time you change or add a filter, you could basically edit the filter wherever you wanted and all your tbird installs would immediately get the changes.

Nice one, very helpful. Two problems: 1) import always overwrites the current filters, no way to append 2) when you manually merge the exported files this extensions ignores additional filters that have the same name.

Hi, I do realize that Thunderbird 2.0 only came out a few days ago, but is there any chance that this extension could be updated to work with it. This feature saves a lot of people a lot of headache. Thanks!

Hi, I have exported filters using the old version of your addon for Thunderbird 1.5, but now can't import them back to Thunderbird 2... it says "Import failed..." Is there a way to import filters rules with the 2.0 addon an export file made by your previous addon ?? Thanks Ben

Hi Benoit You can do it by add a line like this to the beginning of your exported file: RootFolderUri=mailfolder

Why put the Import Filters under Tools, why not add a button under Export in the Message Filters window? Good extension. Thanks.

While Message Filters window closed mozilla/thunderbird will overwrite the filters imported. I don't find a way to avoid this. So use a lazy option: not open it and restart the child after importing.

I tried using this extension to add filter functionality not available in the TB 2.0 UI...and it seemed to work. I opened an exported filter file and changed a condition from "OR (cond1) OR (cond2) OR (cond3)" to "OR (cond1) OR (cond2) AND (cond3)" and re-imported it. It seems that the filter now does both AND and OR conditions, which one can't do with the standard Filters... dialogs. For those who know the Thunderbird internal filter code, is that actually possible? Does this allow me to write more GMail-esque filters?

2 Bugs: 1. When importing it overwrites old filters in that account. 2. When there was a "move to" action "Folder_1 in Account_X" in the filterrule, after import to another account it only says move to: "Account_X" so the folder information is lost.

oops sorry 2. only happens if importing to an imap account with no such folders created. In the newly created "msgFilterRules.dat" everything is listed correctly

Problems with exporting and importing filter in the same account. Even if I change filter name it still overwrites my name. I try to change in the Message filter menu name and then renaming exported file and still does not do help.

Yes. You are right. This simple addon will overwrite any exist filters in the target account.

thank you for your efforts! I wish I had found your extension before trying iMap with gmail; reverting to POP3 wiped my filters.
Any chance of updating this extension; it won't install in my Tbird 3.0 (3.0a1pre) ?

Plugin has trouble launching Nautilus when it's supposed to prompt for the location of the import/export file. Can this be resolved in a future release?

I don't think this is a issue of this this plugin. FYI, I am using ubuntu as my desktop. I don't have any issues. And the addon are wrote in js. It's not nautilus aware.
