Blackbox Project (Thai) Article - Short Version

Regarding for Thailand Government CIO Forum 2007 @ Huahin, the marketing want the short definition of “Sun Blackbox project”.  I was starting to read the http://www.sun.com/emrkt/blackbox/story.jsp to find out the full story about this project. And translate it to short version to make our Government CIO understand the term “Sun Blackbox Project”. And I would like to share this article below:

Concept
    โปรเจค BlackBox นั้นเป็นตู้คอนเทนเนอร์ที่ประกอบไปด้วย Server, Storage, Software และ Network infrastructure ที่พร้อมด้วยระบบทำความเย็น ระบบไฟฟ้าที่ทำหน้าที่เป็น Virtualized Datacenter ที่สร้างขึ้นเพื่อให้มีความสามารถเคลื่อนย้ายได้ง่าย พร้อมทั้งยังประหยัดพลังงาน(รองรับระบบ Greener Energy)  รวมทั้งใช้พื่นที่น้อยและรวมทั้งมีประสิทธิภาพทำงานที่สูง ทำให้มีจุดเด่นดังต่อไปนี้
1.เป็น Datacenter ในรูปของการใช้งานแบบสำเร็จรูป (Instance-on) ที่สามารถนำไปใช้งานได้รวดเร็ว
2.ประหยัดงบประมาณในการขยายตัวและการสร้าง Datacenter
3.เป็น Datacenter ที่ใช้งานได้จริง 100% ที่ปรับสร้างตามความต้องการและนำไปใช้งานในที่ต่างๆ ได้
4.มีความสะดวกและง่ายดายในการสร้าง Datacenter ที่ไม่ได้จำกัดด้วยสถานที่

Inside project blacbox
    ในชุดตัวอย่างของ  Blackbox หนึ่งชุด นั้นจะประกอบได้ด้วย

  • Sun Fire T1000 servers สร้างจาก CoolThreads Technology ที่มี 2000 cores และ 8000 threads ทั้งหมด 250 ตัว
  • x64 Server 250 serversที่มี 1000 cores ทั้งหมด 250 ตัว
  • มี Disk storage 1.5 Petabytes และ 2 Petabytes Tape storage
  • มีจำนวน Memory รวมทั้งหมด 7 Terabytes
  • สามารถที่รองรับจำนวนการใช้งานของ Desktop user 10000 users
  • สามารถที่จะจ่ายพลังงานและระบบทำความเย็นได้ในระบบ rackmounted ได้ 200 Kilowatts

Scenario
    ตัวอย่างของการนำเอา Blackbox ไปใช้ในธุรกิจต่างๆ

  • กลุ่ม หน่วยงานราชการต่างๆ (Government worldwide) ที่สามารถที่เคลื่อนย้ายข้อมูลและ application ต่างๆ โดยง่ายไปที่สถานที่ในการปฏิบัติงานจริงๆ ของเจ้าหน้าที่
  • กลุ่มบริษัทที่ทำธุรกิจในรูปแบบ web ที่ทำให้การขยายตัวของ Datacenter ทำได้ง่ายและไม่ยุ่งยาก
  • กลุ่ม องค์กรการกุศลต่างๆ (Global relief organization) ที่ทำงานในสถานที่ที่ต้องการสะดวกในการเคลื่อนย้ายต่างๆ
  • กลุ่มบริษัทน้ำมัน (Oil company) ที่สามารถนำเอา Datacenter ที่มีกำลังการประมวลผลสูงไปตามสถานที่ต่างๆ ได้แม้แต่ในแหล่งขุดเจาะน้ำมัน

TG Technical department's Datacenter visit.

Yesterday, I went to Thai Airways Technical department datacenter at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

They just setup the new computer datacenter for Technical department. And also bought 2 frame of Sun Fire E20K Server

for running SAP application.

The project was about the implement Sun Cluster for SAP to support their SAP application.  And we done the UAT (User Acceptant Test) for Sun Cluster and the case that SUN propose to UAT was

1. When the network fail
2. When the program fail
3. When the hardbeat fail
4. When the server fail
5. When the storage fail


I try to ask the implementer on the detail of the architecture and the reason of implement. But he just brief me the review of architecture and continue his UAT task.


And we get the problem on the “When the network fail” case because Sun cluster wasn’t function properly. When we took off the 2 networks, the secondary don’t take over the the primary machine.
We just ask customer to skip the first scenario and continue with the second. And we can pass the UAT the second scenario until the fifth scenario.
Our implementer try to diagnostic and solve the problem within today. We will start UAT “When the network fail” again when the problem was solve.  

Conclusion
I think we should prepare the way for any failure like when we do the Prove of Concept or Product demo or User Acceptant Test. And don’t improvident to any situation, we better prepare and test all of the component that present to customer.
And if we still have an unexpected, we also need to prepare the interim solution too. In this case customer don’t be tough. We can ask for postpone UAT until we can solve the problem.

ITA role and responsibility

Today, We (Sun Thailand) had internal unit meeting. And we discuss about role and responsibility of ITA role. Here was the result from my search. I think it's very good for us to understand scope of our job.

Job Summary
This individual contributor is responsible for the overall design and technical oversight of complex business initiatives in customer consulting engagements. By using a combination of SUN and 3rd party offerings (services, hardware, and software products) the Professional Services Solution Architect creates custom solutions and associated cost cases which meet the customer's business requirements. This responsibility typically spans all layers of the business infrastructure interfaces with the customer account and customer executive management to define requirements and recommend solutions.

Job Description
Translates customer requirements into a solution blueprint that demonstrates the requirements can be satisfied.
Reviews and influences existing customer strategic goals.
Leads in the development and creation of the technical solution, project plans, scope of work and assist in assembling Sun teams for customer engagements.
Participates in customer engagement planning and supporting sales efforts.
Assists in qualifying opportunities and ensures that all technical aspects of pre-sales qualification are appropriately prioritized and managed.
Responsible for the development of comprehensive proposals to the customer, including negotiating SOW with customer, contract negotiation with customer and third parties and assembles Sun team to be involved in the engagement.
Provide both pre-sales technical advice as well as advice on how to use technology to solve business problems.
Provide a Primary interface to technical specialists in the other Practices who have the specific vertical domain expertise.
Position Sun's recommended solution within a customer's current architectural environments as well as Sun preferred environments, and being able to articulate the benefits of the Sun preferred environment.
Perform due diligence and follow required business process (eg. DMP, RFPA etc).
Responsible for technical risk assessment, identification and mitigation of potential solution feasibility and risk.
Trusted Advisor through owning and driving the Technical customer relationships
