Power of Community, Eco-Computing on Campus, Education 3.0 Vincent in WWERC 2008

In the morning of 27^th, the presentations focus on Cloud Computing. The speaker is Greg Papadopoulos, who is Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of Research and Development in Sun Microsystems. He explains Cloud Computing Concept by introducing software revolution. He especially mentions network plays a significant role of resources assembly. He introduces “Participate Age” first, which is a new concept indicated by Sun these years. Then he introduces software revolution and compares the differences of innovation revolution between 20^th century and 21^st century. He concludes 2 significant revolutions: one is Open Source software and the role of community development; the other one is Everything is becoming a “service”. Because of these changes, everything around is also changing, including software development, test, publish, installation and quality control and so on. Network is becoming more important in the revolution, especially in academic and research area. Network connects theory, experiment and simulation.

Neil Howe makes a wonderful speech similar as Cloud Computing. He also analyses changes with time passed by. But he does not focus on special technology, instead, he analyses differences of lives, study, work and faith of 20^th century generations. And he also explains technology role in these generations’ lives. He classifies 20^th century people to G.I Generation, Silent Generation, Boom Generation, Generation X and Millennial Generation. He lists represented counties and people around the world to explain his points. His humor makes everyone in happiness, and makes him attractive. At last, he got the longest claps time in the conference.

27日的会议重点提到了云计算。主讲人是Sun公司首席技术研发副总裁Greg Papadopoulos。在讲座中他从时代的变迁以及软件产业的不断进化提出云计算的概念，突出强调了网络在整合资源方面所起到的重要作用。他首先介绍了“参与的时代”的来临，这是Sun公司近年提出的一个新颖的概念。由此引出了软件产业的变革。他列举了软件产业在20世纪和21世纪各方面的不同。最主要提到了在IT业中的两个重大的转变：一个就是软件的开源以及社区在开发中的作用；另一个就是所有的软件都在逐渐变为一种服务。由于这两个重大的转变，进而引发了周边的许多变化，包括在软件的开发，测试，发布，安装，质量管理等等重大方面。在这些转变中，最重要的莫过于网络的重要性大大增加了。 尤其是在教育科研领域，网络将理论、实验和模拟等紧密联系到了一起。

After lunch, there are 4 Break out Sessions in 4 different conference rooms. The most attractive one is Wonderland Project. Kevin Roebuck hold this Virtual Reality Project which is also open source project. Wonderland is a platform. By adding kinds of functions, this project can achieve user’s wants. For example, users can watch video, watch slides, make conversation and make call and so on. It’s really like Second Life. But they are definitely different. Wonderland is using DarkStar Server, which can be constructed on any computer, and developers can make any function to feed the users’ need. Wonderland means a lot to education. The remote education situation will totally change if using wonderland project because students can join the classes just feel they are in there. Teachers using wonderland can make interaction with students and students will learn knowledge with more fun.

在午饭之后，有Break out Session，分为四个分会场进行。其中最吸引人的莫过于Wonderland项目了。Wonderland项目是由Kevin Roebuck主要负责的一个开源虚拟现实项目。Wonderland是一个平台，对已有的3D模型增加功能，使用户可以在这个3D模型中进行想要的动作。例如可以在里面播放视频，播放幻灯片，可以打电话和交谈等等。其成品效果与Second Life比较相像。但是不同的是，Wonderland是连接到后台Darkstar服务器端，这个服务器端可以在任何计算机上搭建起来，而且可以根据用户的需要自行设计场景和功能，使其具有多样性。Wonderland项目对教育界具有极其重要的意义。通过使用Wonderland项目可以将远程教育的现状完全改变，学生可以身临其境的进入到课堂中来，可以通过非常有趣的场景进行互动教学，不仅增加了学习的乐趣，也真正的做到了远程教育的虚拟现实。

The conference begin at 8:30 on 26^th Feb in American West Time. At first, Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun Microsystems show his welcome by video. He welcomes every attendee to join the WWERC 2008. Then Joe Hartley, Vice President of Sun Microsystems, do the Opening Presentation. The topic is “How Open Communities Will Change the Future of Education”.

In Joe’s presentation, he shows main subject of conference: Making a Difference: The Power of Communities. He plays a video of interviews during reception last night. The interviewees talked about what is communities and what’s the functions of communities in their mind.

He also points that there are more and more mature communities in computer science area because of open source. All the developers can communicate and discuss technology during communities. Open Source promotes that, so Sun will continue opening source. Sun encourages promote technology in the community way. For example, Sun Developer Network attracts a lot of talent developers to        discuss technology.

At the same time, he mentions the change of Eco-computing and Education 3.0 because of that. And education methods changed a lot too. Remote education become more and more popular in education.

At last, Joe explains what Sun has done for education. He also talks about Sun Campus Ambassador Project in Universities. He introduces our 5 Campus Ambassadors from different counties around the world. It’s really my honor for being there.

After Joe’s wonderful presentation, the conference will welcome a lot of experts from Sun Microsystems and education worker around the world, including Scott McNealy. In the next days, there will be a lot of fantastic discussion.

美国西部时间2月26日早上8:30，会议正式开始。一开始，现场先播放了Sun公司CEO Jonathan Schwartz的一段视频讲话，在录像中他代表Sun公司表示对光临的与会者的欢迎。接下来是由Sun公司的副总裁Joe Hartley做开场演讲。Joe的演讲主题是“怎样的开放社区才能改变教育的未来”。

Joe在演讲中主要概括了本次大会的主题：是什么让世界变得不一样——是社区的力量。首先他播放了一些在昨晚的招待晚会上面采访的录影，每个人都谈了自己心目中的社区以及社区的作用。在演讲中，他以自己和自己的家庭为例子介绍了很多他在生活中经常使用的社区，以及因为这些社区的存在而使得现代人的生活中发生的改变。例如在生活中经常会使用到的Facebook，ebay等等。他谈到社区并不是一个狭义的概念，而应该从广义的角度去理解社区的概念。例如近年非常流行的第二人生等都是属于多样的社区。近年尤其蓬勃发展的是社交型社区，社区从此不仅局限于校园和工作，而是逐渐渗透到我们生活中的每一个角落。我们每一个人的生活都与许多社区息息相关。本次WWERC也建立了一个专门的社区来完成注册、通知发布等工作，每一位与会者都可以在社区中进行讨论和信息的交流。

同时他还指出，随着开源的潮流，在计算机技术领域形成了更多的社区，全世界的技术爱好者可以在社区中学习探讨技术并因此促进技术的蓬勃发展。开源促使了这一切。所以Sun公司仍然会继续将开源进行到底。Sun一直贯彻以社区来发展技术，例如著名的Sun开发者社区汇集了全世界众多的技术精英，不断推进着技术的发展。

同时，他还谈到由此而改变的Eco-Computing和Education3.0。随着技术的发展，教育的方式发生了很大的变化，从传统的课堂授课到目前流行的远程教育，都因为技术的发展而变得不同。

最后，Joe还谈到了Sun公司在教育界所作的努力。他谈到了现在在Sun公司非常成功的校园大使项目，他介绍了我们5个来自世界各地的校园大使代表并让我们起身让所有人认识我们。对于我来说，这是一个非常光荣的时刻。

Joe Hartley的演讲非常的精彩，是整个会议的总体方向概要。在接下来的两天时间内，将会有包括Scott McNealy的众多来自Sun公司和教育界的专家进行精彩的话题讨论。

At 6:30, WWERC hold reception and Solution Pavilion in Colonial Room of Westin Hotel. Attendees exchange their information and ideas about education. In the reception, Sun Microsystems also show some solutions for education and research trend including new technologies, which impress all the attendees.

 美国西部时间2月25日中午，全球教育及科研大会（WWERC）正式开放注册。来自全世界的几百名与会者入住Westin酒店并注册参与大会。Westin酒店是一间非常具有古典色彩的酒店。注册的地点在Westin的Italian Room。

 2月25日晚6:30，WWERC招待会在Westin酒店的Colonial Room举行。与会者彼此互相了解彼此并互相交换信息。在招待会现场，Sun公司还将会上将讨论的主题提供展台，并有专家现场演示Sun在教育科研行业的领先技术和成就，给各位与会者非常直观的印象。

2008 Worldwide Education and Research Conference will open on 25, Feb in West US time, and 26, Feb China time. It will continue about 3 days.

WWERC is held by Sun for every year. It has passed more than 20 years since the first one. A lot of famous perple join this conference including Sun high level managers, famous professors in education around the world and also technology experts. In WWERC, they will talk about the future of education and their responsibility for this goal.

WWERC08 will hold in Westin Hotel, San Francisco. In this conference, Scott McNealy will show with Sun Vice President Joe Hartley and Executive Vice President John Fowler. They will do excellent resentations in the confecence.

WWERC 08 will focus on below topics: The Power of Communities, Eco-Computing on Campus, Education 3.0 .

2008全球教育及科研大会（WWERC）将于美国西部时间2月25日，中国时间2月26日召开，为期三天。

WWERC全球教育及科研大会是由Sun公司主办的每年一届的全球性教育者的盛会，已经胜利召开了20多届。每一届大会都会有Sun的高层，教育界著名学者，技术专家和远见卓识人士汇聚一堂，共同探讨教育界的未来和自身应担负的责任。2008年的WWERC即将在美国旧金山Westin酒店召开。今年Scott McNealy会出席本次大会，而且Sun副总裁Joe Hartley，执行副总裁John Fowler都会在大会上做精彩演讲。
