Well, I'm back, all lawfully wedded and such, so I can answer the questions that popped up in my absence.

  • When's the GA date for Sun xVM Server?
  • Tragically I can't say more than 'soon'.
  • Will the installation process be Opensolaris-like (Caiman) or Solaris 10-like?
  • More OpenSolaris-like, definitely. It's based on OpenSolaris.
  • Does Sun xVM Server support PCI Passthru?
  • No.
  • Will the Windows PV drivers be open-source or at least free download?
  • They will be free to download but not open-sourced.
  • Is there an easy way to migrate physical machines and Sun xVM VirtualBox VMs into Sun xVM Server?
  • In the upcoming release, no. Obviously, increased interoperability between Sun xVM VirtualBox and Sun xVM Server is one of our goals, but Sun xVM VirtualBox began its life as a third-party product, so its format is unique. Keep your eyes open, though; there are an awful lot of features going into future releases.
  • Is Sun xVM Ops Center going to be open-sourced?
  • No. There will be WS-MAN APIs, though, so keep your eyes open for those when Sun xVM Ops Center 2.0 releases.
  • Which languages will the BUI have? English only?
  • The upcoming releases (Sun xVM Server 1.0 and Sun xVM Ops Center 2.0) will only be in English. We're aiming for support for other languages in future releases.
  • Will Sun xVM VDI move from VMware to Sun xVM?
  • As far as I know, our partnership with VMware is gonna continue - we're not trying to cut off customer choice. Interoperability between Sun xVM VDI and the rest of the Sun xVM portfolio should expand in the future, though.

As always, if you've got questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

    Hi,

    I have two more questions:

    1. Will Sun XVM support migration of domUs from one XVM hypervisor to another?
    2. Will Sun XVM ship with the broadcom NIC drivers? They are included with Solaris 10 but not OpenSol (there you have to compile yourself which is impossible with Sun XVM AFAIK)?

    Thank you

    Dennis,

    1. Yes, we will. Using Sun xVM Ops Center, you can do live, warm, or cold migrations between Sun xVM Servers.
    2. We are shipping the driver found in BRCMbnx
(DESC=Broadcom NetXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet PCI-X/PCIE Adapter Driver).
