What is Sun xVM Ops Center?
Continuing on my last post, I figured I'd talk about Sun xVM Ops Center, and try to condense some information about what it does.
Sun xVM Ops Center is a datacenter management tool. You install it within your datacenter, and it serves up a browser user interface that lets you do a variety of things.
First, it lets you discover and monitor your gear (in this context, 'gear' means hardware, operating systems, Sun xVM Servers - most of the stuff in your datacenter). It uses a variety of discovery protocols to find this gear, and then monitors it for power, memory usage, CPU usage - whatever applies.
It also lets you remotely install new operating systems. At this point, you can provision Solaris 8-10, Red Hat 3-5, and SUSE 8-10. Since Sun xVM Ops Center can provision multiple systems in parallel, this can cut down on a lot of downtime and boredom.
You can also use Sun xVM Ops Center to keep operating systems and firmware up-to-date. You can download patches and use black lists and white lists to customize what patches are installed. Again, if you've got dozens or hundreds of systems, being able to do this remotely and in parallel makes things easier.
With Sun xVM Ops Center 2.0, you'll also be able to manage any number of Sun xVM Servers through the BUI - checking their status and creating and cloning guests. You can also create Virtual Pools - combinations of multiple Sun xVM Servers of the same architecture - which let you migrate guests and load-balance either manually or automatically. You'll also be able to use all of Sun xVM Ops Center's features in a dark site using Disconnected Mode.

I've several question about ops center :
- if we have several xvm server in our firm will they need some sort of upgrade to be use with ops center?
- what sort of licensing will be use with ops center?
- is there any date (even approximate) for xmv server and ops center release?

-Sun xVM Server 1.0 will work with Sun xVM Ops Center 2.0 without any upgrade. If you already have Sun xVM Ops Center 1.0 or 1.1, though, you'll need to upgrade to 2.0 in order to manage Sun xVM Servers.
-I think the licensing is changing between 1.1 and 2.0, but I'm not sure that it's finalized yet. If you call your local Sun sales rep, they might be able to tell you more.

-Sun xVM Ops Center 2 and Sun xVM Server aren't going to release before the holidays, so I'd expect them early next year.
