Prompt:
"That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly. It is dearness only which gives everything its value."
        -Thomas Paine

Assignment:
Do we value only what we struggle for? Plan your response, and then write an essay to explain your views on this issue. Be sure to support your position with specific points and examples. (You may use personal examples or examples from your reading, observations, or, knowledge of subjects such as history, literature, science.)

“No pain, no gain” This is a cliche translated and used by almost everyone around the world. People always work hard to get what they think is valuable. It is either material goal, such as money or fame, or it can be mental goal, such as helping out others or meditation. However, it is not always true that people only value what they struggle for. People can find happiness or satisfaction from trivial things they encounter in life; they sometimes are also disappointed to find not a great value in a thing which they strived for.

Small things or meager events which were acquired accidently or effortlessly can hold great values to people. The novel, "The Catcher in the Rye" is full of things or events happening accidently which Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of the story, valued much. For one example, The music album he bought for his sister, called "The little Shirley Beans", cost only a dollar and was easy to get. However, this album always reminded his sister whenever he was drunk or fell into despair. It served as one of Holden's few connections to his family, past, and innocence. Nonetheless, he never tried to acquire this small, cheap album with great eagerness.

People sometimes find little or no value for what they struggled for. During the middle ages, the pope sent hordes of Christian army under the name of Crusades to conquer back the land of Jerusalem. The hidden and main purpose of the war was to take Jerusalem drive muslims out of the trade route so Europeans could take control of the trade with India. However, although Jerusalem fell into Christendom, the muslim empire of Turks were reluctant to give their way. Trade route were still blocked. For crusades, who lost tens of thousands of men from battle, disease, and malnutrition, their prospect was only their holy land, which was certainly a little value compared to what they sacrificed for.

To put things straight, people are not always happy about only what they struggled for. They do find a great value in things which are trivial, and sometimes, things which cost a lot does not give enough payback to those who tried really hard for it. It is true that people struggle for happiness, but it is not always true that those people struggle for gives back happiness.

What makes people change?

Many says that changing have to take a risk, but there is a bigger risk if change does not happen. However, there certainly are many situations which changing does not require any risk, but there is a huge risk if there is no change. In this sense, change is always needed for people. What makes people to change, however, is a point which not everyone agrees about. In my perspectives, motives for change comes from inside or outside, depending on the situation. Moreover, sometimes motivations for changing comes from internally and externally.

Internal motivation are one of the major incentive of changing. Although it is hard to have a intrinsic decision for a goal, the change from it tends to stay permanent. My personal example of my first year in middle school is a perfect case of intrinsic inducement. In my first test of the middle school, I did not study hard, thinking that I still may get decent grades like when I was in public school in Australia. The result was terrible. I faced the truth. I needed to change. I needed to study hard or unless my life would start to turn into the wrong direction. Then, I gave up many things to change myself into a 'Study-Top', a Korean nickname for kids who get great grades. As a result, the habit of studying hard and concentrating in my school works still is inherent inside me. I really changed myself.

Another kind of incentive for changing comes from outside. External motivations sometimes do give temporary change, and in other occasions, give temporary changes for a certain goal. One example of a temporary change which extrinsic changes bring is a reward. Parents can ask their children that there would be a new toy if the children's room is tidy for a week, their children may change their behavior for a week. However, when the price is given, they may stop cleaning their room and return to their older state. On the contrary, occasions such as car accidents from drink driving or heart attack from lack of exercise can be a striking external motivation to people. Those who have survived from it would never drink-drive, or start doing some exercise.

Sometimes, these two incentives combine to change people's behaviour. People like president Park Jung Hee or Biff Loman from "Death of the Salesman" are those who changed from influences from both inside and outside. President Park Jung Hee was originally a Japanese military officer in Manchuria during the occupation era, notorious for killing many Korean liberalists. When Japan lost the war and returned to its home country, he changed into a patriot. There were two reasons. First was an external one, which was execution of many of his fellow Koreans who served in Japanese army. The second was a motivation from the inside; he wanted to make Korea as strong as Japan. This changed him to become one of Korea's legendary presidents. Biff Loman, in the play "Death of a Salesman", also is expected to change. His guilt for his father's death and new determination for future serves as the internal motives of his change, while his father's legacy is an extrinsic incentive for his new life.

Changes are inevitable. People must change to develop themselves, their group, their country, and consequently, history. What makes them change comes from various origins. From inside, people make firm and strong decisions to change. From outside, people will strive hard to achieve the goal, whether it is temporary or not. Finally, the incentive for changing comes from both of these sources. These motivations will keep people from staying the same, and making our world somewhat a more diverse place.

Suppose you are designing your dream house. What will it look like? What do you want to include in it? And where do you want to locate it? Use specific reasons and examples to support your idea.

Many people have their own imaginary house inside their minds. Imaginary homes contain some aspects that people have always wanted. Also, idealistic things can be included in the house. It could be a tall and big building in the middle of the city. Or, it could be a small house in the quiet countryside with no modern things included. What is your imaginary house? I will describe my own imaginary house, including external appearance, location, and interior aspects.

My imaginary house looks like a building that has been never made before. It has the unique shape of a pile of white cubes, irregularly organized. Each cube contains one room, and a glass cylinder connects them. Also, the roof is made out of glass, which allows me to see the sky conveniently, without the necessity of going out to see it. Also, it would be a good substitute for light in the house. When I am not in the mood for watching the sky, or when the sky is dark, I could just press a button and the slide curtains could close off the window. The reason that I have made this original shaped building is that I don’t want a house that looks too dull or has a common shape. I always want to make something unique that separates me from the same kind of look. Therefore, I chose this unique kind of shape.

The location of my house would be near the silent beach. It is a very quiet place that allows me to enjoy nature’s beauty, and relax without a stressful and limited lifestyle. Furthermore, it is a perfect location to allow me to see the sunrise and sunset. The main reason that I made the location near the beach is that I love nature. Since I’ve been living inside a city, I’ve had only a few chances to go to the mountains, rivers, and beaches. That is why I want to Commune with nature more. Thus, I want to build my house near the beach and the mountains.

The interior is the most important of all. That’s why my house’s interior includes lots of things. First, I would make a multimedia room. The room includes a wide screen LCD TV, a projector, a fast-running computer, and a good audio system with lots of high quality speakers. With those components, I could enjoy lots of music videos, movies, TV programs, and lots of games with high technical quality. As I’m fond of both listening to and playing music, I would make myself a music room, including a piano, a stage for my personal orchestra and musical band, and lots of music CDs and records. I could sit back and enjoy the leisure moment of music. I would also include a gym and a swimming pool in the yard, in order to get regular exercise. Furthermore, I would raise a dog, because I never had chance to raise one in the house. I would get a personal butler too. Most importantly, all the things will be powered by solar energy. It is economical nonpolluting, and is less expensive.

In conclusion, the main reason that I want to build this kind of house is because I want my house to have both nature’s qualities, and modern aspects. Like my imaginary house, including both nature and modern technology, I think that the freshness of nature and modern technology can blend together very well, and will have no risk of tilting to one side or the other too much. Thus, by blending one character into another, I think that it could make a better and more convenient life.

During one's lifetime, friends could be one of the things that could change your personality greatly. That's why a friend should be the right person that matches you properly. What do you consider the most important personality for a friend? A friend who is smart or intelligent? A friend who has a sense of humor? Or someone who is reliable? From those above, I consider that a reliable and trustworthy friend is better than anything else.

The first reason is that a trustful friend could be the most helpful person inside school or work. For example, let's consider that you've gotten into big trouble because your teacher has misunderstood a situation. If one of your friends is reliable, he or she can at least support you and explain the situation to the teacher. This act cannot be done if a friend is smart or funny. Through your trustful friend, you will be able to feel more comfortable than anyone else inside the school or work.

Secondly, a friendship cannot continue unless friends trust each other. Fights between friends occur when they misunderstand and distrust each other. A friendship can be broken easily because of that. Sometimes, you might feel a little bit jealous of your smart or funny friend. However, when you and your friend believe in each other, a relationship can last forever. Trustful and reliable friends can be the real friends who can really change your life. No matter how bright or humorous your friend is, a trustworthy friend and your friendship could last longer than any other friends.

In conclusion, I would state again that I want a reliable and trustful personality most in my friend. In order to be comfortable in school life, also to encourage your friendship to last longer than anyone else, I consider that your friend being reliable is the most significant thing.

On Friday I started up my videocamera and filmed as I went into one of my last conversations with John and his team before making my decision. I passed under the sign that said "Sand Hill Road."

It is the dream of many entrepreneurs around the world to come to Sand Hill Road and talk a venture capitalist out of a few million dollars to start a company.

I've never worked for a venture capitalist before. When I mentioned the companies that were backing John Furrier to my friend Buzz Bruggeman, his voice dropped and he said "wow." (They were USVP and VenRock). Now, if you know Buzz, you know he knows everyone in the tech industry. So, I knew then that John had gotten the best.

John later told me how he did it: he interviewed a bunch of venture capitalists. He said that process taught him a lot about how clued in each firm was, and how much they'd help PodTech along after the money came.

I'm sure we'll talk a lot more about what it's like working for a venture-backed firm.

Some people prefer to live in a traditional house. Others decide to live in a modern apartment building. Which would you prefer to live in? Why? Discuss the question with specific reasons and examples.

I would prefer to live in a modern apartment building. In now days, lots of people live in apartments and high buildings. The reason for that event occurred is that lots of places in the earth has been urbanized dramatically. Lots of people lived in a big and high apartments because of a prolonged lack of ground. So people built lots of apartments now days to use the small ground more efficiently and successfully.

If you build a traditional house, only you and your family will be able to live. But, when you build an apartment, lots of other people can live above or below your story, using only the space of one house. The population is greatly increasing now days, and as a result, the people came to the conclusion of using the grounds more efficiently and making higher buildings for keeping lots of people using only small amount of ground.

There is also another reason for preferring the apartment building. If you live with lots of other people, you and your neighbour can help each other, which can increase your sociability. We share with our neighbour lots of things, such as foods, some clothes and other lots of things. When you have a mental problem, you can discuss about it with your neighbour. If you need a big help for some work, you can ask your neighbour for help. Your neighbour can be really helpful during a lifetime.

In conclusion, I like to say once more that living in apartment building could be more beneficial for you and the government. By using the ground very efficiently, and getting help from neighbours, you can be very happy about living in an apartment building.

People live longer nowadays than in the past. What do you think causes this change in human life? Discuss the reasons with specific examples.

Human life suspension increased significantly. There are many people who are living over eighty years old, and few people are looking on their hundredth birthday. I think improvement in health and hygiene as well as transportation dedicated much to longer life span of people.

Hygienic and health conditions had been certainly improved, causing people to live longer. Long ago, many had suffered from diseases which is curable nowadays. Invention of vaccine and antibiotics also distributed a lot for longer life of people. Moreover, hygiene conditions greatly improved too. For example, London in colonial days had a stream next to the road which lets trashes and wastes down to the Thames River. This brought many diseases to the city. However, these disgusting waterways are now gone, and citizens of London are having excellent health conditions. Thanks to these great improvement, people are now able to live more.

Transportation system greatly influenced people's lifespan. In olden days, many people walked and sometimes, rode horses. These method of moving is quite tiring. Constant tiredness weaken people's body, causing them to perish early. On the other hand, modern transportations, like cars, trains or airplanes, are not only fast, but comfortable. People are less likely to get tired from transportation. Thus, people could live more because of development of transportation.

To sum up, I think people are able to live more because the development of medical science including medicines and hygiene status. In addition, improvement in transportation also contributed a lot. When these things enhances on and on, we will be able to live longer.

You don't realise how dependent you are on the Internet until it is no longer there!
All weekend, our connection to the Internet was running a little sluggishly. I just put it down to maintenance - either by my ISP (BT Openworld) or the websites I was visiting. Monday morning came, and I started to catch up with my work email, and it got slower and slower before finally stopping altogether.

In the past, when this has happened, I've been able to clear it by resetting (ie power-cycling) the broadband router, so this is what I attempted to do. In doing this, the router should pick up a new IP address at the POP and with a bit of luck we'd be on our way at full speed (1Mbps) again. Unfortunately, that's where my luck ran out!

I left the router powered off for around 5 minutes whilst I did some other work. Then, flicked the switch on the back to power it on again. Nothing happened  When I switched it off again, the power LED flashed momentarily, along with the activity light on the port on my firewall/switch which is connected to the router.

Now, this has happened before - a few weeks ago in fact, and that time I simply flicked the switch again and it sprang back into life. Not so this time. Lots of rocking the switch back and forth elicited no response from the router. It was as dead as a Norwegian Blue .

I phoned BT immediately, and they managed to schedule me in for an engineer visit today (Wednesday) - between 10:30am and 1pm. When I asked if they could just get an engineer to drop off a new router for me, the answer was that they couldn't speak to the engineers, only schedule their time!!!

So here I am, writing this after 2 days without any form of Internet connectivity. Even my ?? and ??? are feeling lost without access to email, MSN, stock prices and the shopping sites.

One of the things which surprised my most about this little outage is that Sun do not have any kind of SLA (Service Level Agreement) with BT for those of us who work from home full time. I would have thought it would be in Sun's interest to have an agreement to expedite repairs and minimise downtime, but obviously they figure that I could always go to my nearest office to do some work. Well, I could, but for me that is a 1.5hr drive each way, so it would be quicker and easier to visit an Internet cafe just to catch up. In the end though, as I've mentioned, I've had enough work to keep me busy without having to resort to that. Fortunately, I'd just come to the end of an important phase of our project, so my work hasn't been unduly affected. I've managed to catch up on some documentation tasks for TOI's to our new sustaining group, which I'd probably have taken a week to do otherwise. I also have a team-mate in Leeds who calls regularly to keep me up-to-date with anything important.

Having had connectivity restored, I am disappointed to find that nobody desperately needed me, and the world hadn't, in fact, stopped turning just because I was "down" for over 2 days
