Thursday December 01, 2005 Today was the first day of Sun's Desktop Summit, and I feel really charged. Although I have been working for about the past 4 years on the GNOME project at Sun, this is really the first time that the various diverse teams at Sun with an interest in the desktop have had a chance to meet face-to-face and discuss where we are, and what we can be doing to make some positive difference in the open/free desktop space. It is always good to find some face-to-face time with many people who were previously faceless to me. And also good to have some time to spend with my team. Just had a really uplifting chat with Gman which motivated me to blog.
I'm still cranking away at making GDM's configuration logic more sane. I'm hacking up some code so that gdmflexiserver and gdmconfig no longer have to access the config file directly to access the information from the various [server-foo] sections, and will instead get the information via the sockets protocol like is done for the other configuration options. I also need to fix gdmsetup so that it uses the new configuration API. Once that is done, it will be easy to make further improvements to the way GDM manages its configuration, like provide server-specific configuration options and support system-wide and machine-specific configuration. That's my next step.
A few weeks ago I got the 0.9 version of the GStreamer SunAudio plugin done, but its ending up being a slow process getting the plugin into CVS. I've pretty much addressed all the concerns brought up when the maintainers reviewed my patch, but I still have some documentation to do. I hope to get this done soon, but it may be hard to find time until the summit is over. Hopefully I'll find time before then. I also was able to putback a patch to the gnome-about-me capplet which allows it to build on non-Linux systems. Aside from that, I've been busy with lots of internal ARC stuff. Right now I'm looking forward to spending more time over the next couple weeks here at the Sun Desktop Summit. Kudos to John Rice for all his work putting the summit together.

TAS or Texas Auto Shipping company has the absolute worst and rude- ist customer service rep. Avoid a big fat headache and stay away from TAS.
