Stand Up and Code for Freedom!

Or should we say "Keep your heads down and code for freedom"? Yesterday Sun announced the Code for Freedom contest to commemorate 60 years of India's independence. The contest is open to students in Indian universities and colleges and will run till January 2008. Winners will get laptops and other electronic gizmos, and every contributor will receive a Sun T-Shirt! A contributor is a contestant whose contributed code is accepted back into one (or more) of the five contest areas: OpenSolaris, Project GlassFish, NetBeans, Apache Derby, and OpenPortal.

Details about the contest, how to enter, etc., can be found here .

Solaris Cluster 3.2 Available for Download

Solaris Cluster 3.2 (aka Sun Cluster 3.2) has been available for download for about a week now. This Solaris Cluster 3.2 is actually a bundle containing Sun Cluster 3.2, Sun Cluster Agents 3.2 and Sun Cluster Geographic Edition 3.2. Run Sun Cluster 3.2 on Solaris 10 11/06 to use new and enhanced support for the latest Solaris 10 features - HA ZFS, Zones and SMF. A lot of people like the new command line inteface (New CLI) as well. The product can be downloaded from here.

Read more about the new release on this Sun Cluster Oasis post.

Google testing OpenSolaris!
While this is not really new news, I was so excited on reading the article that I thought I'd post a little blurb here. You can read the original story here.

So why is there so much interest in OpenSolaris? The reasons are many, but perhaps the biggest factor is the fact that Solaris is now an Open Source software. And there are a lot of really powerful new features on OpenSolaris: Zones, ZFS, DTrace, Service Management Facility, to name but a few. And the development process for OpenSolaris is now open, with members from outside of Sun participating. So, it's hardly surprising that it's looking increasingly like the Bazaar development model! Check out this thread for a good example of the open development process.

More than 5 million users (and counting) have registered to use Solaris 10 since Jan 2005. That's an impressive number by any standards for a UNIX Operating System.

Sun Cluster 3.2 beta experience
Sun Cluster 3.2 release has been in beta for some time. One beta customer, Robert Milkowski has blogged about his experience here. Among the many cool new features in SC3.2 is support for HA-ZFS.
